RAV ABBA ARIKHA dit (fin IIe-IIIe s.)

L’un des principaux amoraim de Babylone et fondateur de l’académie de Sura, Rav, né à Kafri, au sud de la Babylonie, appartenait à l’une des grandes familles d’Israël. Ayant émigré en Palestine, il étudia sous la direction de son oncle ネiyya, qui l’introduisit auprès de Judah ha-Nasi. Il connut les plus grands tannaim de la dernière génération et soutint en leur compagnie maints débats sur des points de la halakha. Après avoir étudié la Torah en Palestine et été ordonné par Judah ha-Nasi lui-même, il décida finalement de s’établir en Babylonie, en 219, semble-t-il; mais, rencontrant quelques difficultés auprès des sages de Nehardea, il quitta cette ville pour fonder à Sura un bet din (tribunal rabbinique) et une académie qui devait bientôt attirer des centaines d’élèves de Sura et des environs. Non seulement les Juifs de la région de Sura, mais aussi les maîtres de toute la Babylonie, et parmi eux Samuel, reconnurent et acceptèrent la primauté des décisions et de la juridiction de Rav. Bien plus, Yochanan, le chef de l’académie de Tibériade et alors l’un des plus remarquables sages de Palestine, tenait Rav pour son maître en matière de halakha.
